I’ve always loved Mother’s Day because I’m obsessed with my mom and any day that is all about her makes me the happiest. I spent 30 years saying “Happy Mother’s Day” to all of the moms I know, until one day something magical happened. My first Mother’s Day.
It was the greatest feeling to have someone wish me a Happy Mother’s Day. Even though my little bundle of joy (who was 3 months at the time) couldn’t say it, the words didn’t need to be spoken. The image of my sweet little Olivia peacefully sleeping in my arms was the best gift anyone could have ever given me, and I will cherish that memory forever.
Now I’m an old vet at Mother’s Day. It’s officially my second one and it’s gotten a lot more exciting. Olivia is walking all over the place and greets me daily with “mama!” “dog” and lots of yelling in what appears to be a different language. I don’t know what she’s saying, but the sound of her sweet little voice happily yelling while she knocks everything around the house down, will be the greatest second Mother’s Day gift I could ever ask for.
Now that I am a mom, I realize it isn’t about the breakfast in bed (although that’s nice), or the gift card to mom’s favourite restaurant. I will spend my Mother’s Day simply sitting back and taking in the gift of getting to be my little princess’ momma.
Motherhood is loud, exhausting, wild, fun, hard, joyful and life changing. It isn’t for the faint of heart, and it’s truly a blessing if you are fortunate enough to get to have a baby. I am so thankful to spend my days and nights nurturing and protecting Olivia, and Mother’s Day reminds me just how lucky I am.
So here’s the biggest and loudest HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to those who have given every part of themselves to another little being. It’s the most rewarding job in the world and you are all superheroes!
